After receiving his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Hong Kong in 1976, Kam Biu attended Rutgers University to study experimental particle physics in 1977 and obtained his Ph.D. in 1983. He then carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Washington in Seattle until 1986 when he went to Fermilab as an Associate Scientist. Professor Luk moved to the University of California at Berkeley/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1989 and joined the Institute for Advanced Study/Physics Department of HKUST in 2021.

He received an R.R. Wilson Fellowship of Fermilab in 1986-1989, an Outstanding Junior Investigator award from the U.S.A. Department of Energy in 1989-1991, and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in 1990-1994. Professor Luk was a co-recipient of the W.K.H. Panofsky Prize in experimental particle physics from the American Physical Society in 2014 and the Future Science Prize in Physical Sciences in 2019. He was awarded the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics as the co-leader of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment in 2016.

Kam Biu is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Physical Society.
